I’m still dealing with a bum knee.  Each week I convince myself that it’s all better and attempt to run, only to feel the pain midway through the run.  This weekend I committed to walking (with a few sprints sprinkled in for fun) and found that it is possible to get a good workout in without running.

But I’ve been doing something since before this whole thing started that I have to think has helped in my weight-loss efforts: climbing stairs.  Elevators — be damned.  I don’t take ‘em.  I park in an underground parking garage at work and climb the stairs to ground level… and take stairs back down to my office.  If my boss calls me up to a meeting, I walk up the two floors to her office.  And once or twice a week, I take a 15-20-minute break and hike across my company campus to the tallest building and climb the 10 flights of stairs — sometimes twice.

I used to “hike” to Starbucks for my breaks and eat a slice of banana loaf.
