A few ah-ha discoveries (that may actually be rediscoveries, but whatever works, right?):

  • I feel better about myself throughout the day if I get up and work out — even if it’s just taking a half-hour walk.
  • I eat less in the afternoon if I eat oatmeal at breakfast.
  • My calves still hurt the next day if I climb the steps at the 10-story building at work (so it’s never pointless).
  • The fewer choices I have (in terms of meals), the healthier I eat.  When I head to the commissary at lunch, I know in advance I’m either going to get a salad or a turkey wrap.
  • I don’t miss cheese on my turkey wrap.  Or full-fat mayo.
  • I feel better at the end of the day when I’ve had a lot of water (and multiple trips to the bathroom throughout the day get me away from my desk).
  • Fat-free frozen yogurt makes me very happy (and worth skipping the baked Lays at lunch).
  • Gimmick and deadline-driven weightloss efforts don’t work for me (or work only temporarily).  Tiny lifestyle changes seem to be my answer.  My mantra: do what you can live with forever.
  • I’m procrastinating on my writing endeavors for the same reason I stayed 20 pounds overweight for so long.  Writing a whole book is just like losing 20 pounds: overwhelming.  If I can just concentrate on doing 5-10 pages a week (ala losing 1 pound a week), it’s just a matter of time before it’s done.
  • Same goes for the home organization.  (Sound familiar.)
  • Knowing something and doing it are two VERY different things.
